Winter Preparation Tip

Pick a couple of pollen-laden combs from the brood nest. Mark them "pollen" and move them up to the top of the hive where they will become filled with honey during the fall flow. When you prepare your colony for winter, these pollen combs can be moved into position for the bees to eat over the winter. Make sure these do not contain eggs or young larvae. Alternatively, you can freeze two combs of pollen during the summer, and then place them in the center of the upper brood chamber after removing the fall crop. The bees will cover the pollen with a few gallons of fall feed.
